OUT-OF-STATE EXPERIENCED OFFICER
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Police Officer – Out-of-State Experienced Officer position is for certified law enforcement professionals from outside Virginia seeking to continue their careers with the Chesapeake Police Department. Applicants must meet Virginia’s Compulsory Minimum Training Standards, with exemptions evaluated case-by-case.
Candidates must have at least 3 years of continuous law enforcement experience in comparable duties, are currently serving as state or local officers, and are in good standing with their employers. OUT-OF-STATE EXPERIENCED OFFICER
This position has a starting annual salary of $55,000 – $72,296 based on qualifying years of law enforcement experience.
- Conducts routine patrols in residential and business areas; maintains contact with businesses and residents to establish good relations.
- Responds to calls for police service and responds to crimes, domestic disputes, disturbances, disputes among neighbors, juveniles, or other incidents; apprehends law breakers as necessary; conducts follow-up investigations of crimes and other incidents, conducts surveillance of areas for suspected or potential criminal activity.
- Provides information and/or assistance to the public, informing citizens of services in the community, or providing referrals to other city, county, or state agencies.
- Maintains the peace and safety of the community by quelling public disturbances and maintaining order at group functions.
- Provides for the safe and convenient flow of traffic and pedestrians within the community, investigates traffic accidents, enforces traffic violations, promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety, reports unsafe road conditions, and conducts DUI or other investigations.
Issues civil or legal documents such as traffic citations; prepares written reports, forms, and other documents as required; may testifies in civil and criminal court proceedings or give depositions. - Provides specialized police service when trained and assigned such as K-9, Bicycle Patrol, Motorcycle Patrol, or other.
- May perform administrative or specialized functions when trained and assigned such as administrative support services, property and evidence, field and firearms training, public information, athletics, or other.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education:
- Requires a high school diploma or GED
- Successful completion of the Chesapeake Police Academy, another acceptable Police Academy, or comparable training
Other Requirements
- Must be a United States citizen
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- When coming from outside of Virginia, law enforcement officers must meet the minimum training standards as outlined in the Compulsory Minimum Training Standards and Performance Outcomes. Training exemptions are reviewed and determined on a case-by case basis.
- Must have at least 3 years/36 months continuous law enforcement experience commensurate with those of a Virginia law enforcement office
- Must currently be serving as a state or local Law Enforcement Officer.
- Must be in good standing with curent / former employers.
- Must meet all requirements of 15.2-1705 Code of Virginia.
- Must submit valid certifications, training records, and other requested documents
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required.
